Spartina Eco Boat Tours
Join us for a marine ecology expedition.
Discover Port Royal Sound’s unique ecosystem while aboard Spartina, the signature vessel of Spartina Marine Education Charters. Owner/operator Captain Amber Kuehn is a marine biologist who was raised in the Lowcountry. Her lifelong passion has been the local waterways and the life they sustain. She grew up exploring the May River on a 15-foot motor boat, which she learned to handle by age 12. This access to a watery playground planted a seed that would lead her to a master’s degree in Marine Biology and a Master Captain’s License. These pursuits took her to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Maui, Hawaii, for a five-year hiatus from the Lowcountry.
As a scuba instructor and dive boat captain, she educated divers on what they would observe submerged in the Atlantic, and later, the Pacific. When the Spanish moss, rustling palmettos and emerald marsh called her back home, she reacquainted herself with the Lowcountry by guiding eco-tour charters for various companies on Hilton Head Island and in Bluffton. Amber now immerses herself in field biology on a daily basis with her own floating laboratory. While aboard Spartina, you will explore the salt-marsh estuary and learn about micro-organisms, measure salinity, observe local wildlife and see live specimens in the viewing tank. You’ll leave with a deep appreciation of the marsh’s intricacies.
Tours are designed for ages six and above. The cost is $30 for children ages six to 11; $40 for 12 and above.
Spartina is a custom-built U.S. Coast Guard-certified vessel that holds 22 passengers. Departures depend on the weather. Refunds will only be issued if the captain cancels the trip due to weather conditions or too few registrations. Reservations can be transferred to another individual, or in some circumstances, transferred to another date.
